De Shortcut Game kan worden gebruikt om mensen in zowel technische als niet technische rollen inzicht te verschaffen in de verborgen kosten van het nemen van ‘shortcuts’ in werk. Denk hierbij aan continu te hoge druk die leidt tot burnout, de prijs van ‘technical debt’ of de verborgen kosten van essentiële onderdelen later doen.
De game wordt gespeeld op een spelbord waarbij dobbelstenen en de keuzes die de spelers maken, bepalen welke tokens zij onderweg verdienen en welke eindscore daarbij hoort. Vervolgens wordt het een serious game door met de spelers te reflecteren op de metaforen in de game en hun relatie tot werk.
De belangrijkste topics voor reflectie zijn:
- Het nemen van ‘shortcuts’ in werk, betekent vaak later afbetalen van die schuld
- Wat zijn lange termijn effecten als die schuld niet wordt afbetaald

The Shortcut Game is used to help people in both technical and non-technical roles understand the concept of ‘debt’. This can apply to maintaining a sustainable pace, the price of technical debt, the delayed cost of taking shortcuts and much more related topics.
The game is played on a game board where dice and the choices players make, determine which tokens they earn along the way and their final score. It then becomes a serious game by reflecting with the players on the metaphors in the game and their relationship to work.

- Taking 'shortcuts' in work, often means paying off that debt later
- What are long-term effects if that debt is not paid off
- What is the effect of this on work happiness of your colleagues
